Are you angry about abortion being illegal now? Blame Mitch McConnell. Are you angry about the president having broader, overreaching power? Blame Mitch McConnell. Are you angry about laws protecting the environment being tossed out daily? Blame Mitch McConnell. Are you angry about new laws limiting gun regulation? Blame Mitch McConnell.
All of this didn't happen because of Trump alone. The groundwork was laid before Trump even entered the scene. When there was a Supreme Court vacancy in 2016, after Justice Antonin Scalia passed away, then Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell delayed any confirmation vote for a new appointee for nearly 10 months. This was to prevent then president (and Democrat) Barack Obama from being able to appoint a justice at all—even though the Constitution gave him every right to do so.
Mitch was playing politics. He pushed the vote out assuming the next president would be Republican. He played the long game, and it worked. And he was right. Except it wasn't his kind of Republican. But of course Mitch didn't know that until he had pushed through not one but three Supreme Court appointees...all appointed by Trump.
Now, as the U.S. descends into ideological chaos, even Mitch realizes what he's done. Canada just started pulling Kentucky bourbon off its shelves in protest of America’s tariffs. Guess where Mitch McConnell is from? Kentucky. Poetic, isn’t it? The man who helped install the court that allowed all this damage to happen is now watching his own state's economy get damaged irreversibly for what he helped bring about.
And that was just the beginning. Now Mitch is an outcast in his own party. He lost his position as Senate Majority Leader and is now considered a Republican that doesn't support Trump or, as they see it, not a Republican at all. This is what happens when you play politics like a weapon. You might win in the short term. But the damage? It echoes.
So if you're wondering how things got this bad, this fast, don’t start at Trump. Put Mitch McConnell at the top of the list.
