America Must Dismantle Trump Legacy Once He Is Gone

After Egyptian ruler Akhenaten died, subsequent rulers reversed almost everything he did. His son Tutankhamun, whom we have all heard of, did most of it. Later, the pharaoh Horemheb attempted to purge Akhenaten from history completely. His name was chiseled off monuments. Statues were destroyed or reused as building material. Lists of kings skipped his reign entirely. His city Amarna was abandoned and dismantled. For centuries, he was basically missing from the official historical record.

If any of this sounds familiar, it is because Trump has been trying to do this to Joe Biden's presidency. Being such a sore loser from Biden defeating him in the 2020 presidential election, he has systematically tried to dismantle everything Biden accomplished.

In fact, it could be said that Trump is trying to dismantle many things: remembering slavery, welcoming immigration, legal abortion, voting rights, birthright citizenship, international relations, USAID, CFPB, NATO, etc.

And once he is gone, I think this is the exact tactic to apply to Trump's legacy too. No one has earned that treatment more. His face, name, and policies should be completely removed and new laws added to stop any future president from over-extending his reach, perverting the presidency, or using the position for personal gain.

Many of us would love to get rid of everything that reminds us of Trump right down to his animatronic likeness in Disney's Hall of Presidents...and then pretend he never existed.

But maybe that's the wrong course of action. Maybe it is best to do the opposite. Of course we will still have reverse his damage to the country as well as take his name off everything.

But then we should remember Trump forever.

We should remember him as what happens when we take democracy for granted. We should remember him as the worse-case scenario of what unchecked powers can do and put laws in place to limit them. We should remember him as what to look for in potential leaders and avoid at all costs.
